I actually blogged about the iPhone and "proximity marketing" a year or so ago that talked along these lines. The point being is that it's only a matter of time... and it IS coming (no reason to think it isn't). Add GPS enabled phones that access this data, and this kind of stuff can be sent to you not only at the right time, but also when you are at a place you can make a purchase.
For example... you only need to add a dash of the DB to the Starbucks iTunes store, and it's already set up! You like Matthew Ebel's music? hey, we played something in the last hour you may be interested in. Press here to purchase!
